Moving- Part 1

Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke said, “No operation plan extends with any certainty beyond the first encounter with the main body of the enemy”

Ours didn’t even make it that far.

It started with getting the rental trailer to haul our stuff out here. I won’t name the company, but they are very well known in the self moving business and they have a ‘U’ at the begining of their name. We arrived on time on a Sunday to get the trailer only to be told that our vehicle wasn’t rated to haul their trailer which required a Class 3 hitch.

Well, we had a Class 3 hitch and our SUV was rated for Class 3 towing but they wouldn’t budge because “If your transmission is ruined we would be liable for it and we don’t want that”. So we had to get a truck and car hauler – exit an extra $2,000 from our pockets – good thing I have very wonderful parents who were able to help us out., but we have to pick it up the next day so now we are a day behind.

We then spent the next three days loading stuff onto the truck and I must say that I am truly amazed at how much STUFF my wife was able to pack into her studio. It was like a clown car at a circus – every time I would turn around there were more canvases coming out. Not small canvases either, some of them were 70″ x 30″, plus easels, drop cloths, storage bins – there was a lot of stuff.

I can’t complain about it though, my kitchen was just as bad in it’s own way. Lots of Kitchenaid toys, knives, cutting boards and all the other stuff, but I was still the one who had to carry it all down three flights of stairs and load it all up (she was the one putting it all in boxes). In the end though since we had more room in a truck than we would have had with a trailer we ended up taking more stuff which took us longer to load and by the time I was done I must have gone up and down the stairs a couple of hundred times.

Have I mentioned that I hate humidity? I must have sweat off at least 5 pounds in the heat and humidity and because of all that, we ended up leaving two days later than we had wanted to. We ended up hitting the road on a Wednesday about 10:00 in the morning because i couldn’t get up at 6:00 am like I had wanted to – I was worn out, sue me.

So, we headed out of Ohio in a truck that we really hadn’t wanted, carrying more stuff than we wanted, and having spent more money than we wanted. It kind of went downhill after that and I’ll go into that later.

Oh, and the truck we rented had the words “Comfort Ride” on the side – what a load of crap. I’ve ridden sway backed mares that were more comfortable and quieter than that stupid truck we rented.

I think next time I may pay someone to do it all.
