Instinct, there are several points that you need to consider here:

1) The Catholic Church *crossing myself* has been using fear to control people for centuries! Just look at the crusades! This hasn't always been a bad thing, as their pushing has caused a lot of folks to respond with hope and change (which is apparently really important in today's world), some for the better, some for the worse (which apparently doesn't matter just as long as it is indeed hope and/or change). Take Martin Luther and King Henry VIII for example, respectively!

2) According to the new pope, you have to be a cathaholic in order to be a christian, anyway. That makes all protestants like me infidels and cultists. Ref:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,288841,00.html
So, I suppose that all of us heathens are going to burn in hell unless we do what he tells us to anyway.

3) These "new" mortal sins aren't new at all. You may not be familiar with the "cathoholic bible" but it has several books that are not in the protestant bible that was first translated into English by the Catholic Church under the leadership of King James I. For one, in Benedict's bible, there are other commandments in some secret manuscripts that say things like "Thou shalt not genetically engineer thine LORD's creatures nor men." And, who can forget the classic, "Thou shalt not Mess with Texas, nor any other land that thine LORD hath created."

4) Most people don't realize that what we know as the bible is the amended version, anyway. If they published the WHOLE THING, people would just get bored and not read it. When the Pharisees asked Jesus what was the greatest commandment of all in Matthew 22:37–40 and Mark 12:28–34, and he said to Love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul, and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, the part that was left out of our current translations was "...oh, except for abortion and drug dealing. Don't do that stuff, either or you'll burn in hell." This was recently found in some manuscripts that pre-date all of the previously known ones. It was recently recovered from a crypt under Rome or something...

The other interesting point to me is that it was the OLD testament that had people confessing their sins. New testament says that you don't have to confess to a priest and can talk directly to God through prayer.

It's all about control for them.

The Catholic church has done more damage to reputation of the Christian faith than any other organization in history. Their bigotry and intolerance pushes people to reject what should be the most open and welcoming faith in the world. Jesus never rejected anyone. He didn't say let he who has the highest position in the church cast the first stone. He also said that All have sinned, but He died to pay the price for all the sins of man so that we could be with Him in Heaven. He never said that we needed a church or a priest to get us there either.
